Bulldog Bound Perspectives - Kyle Austin

Kyle Austin - Architecture Major
Kyle Austin - Architecture Major

Meet Kyle Austin, a transfer student from Jones County Junior College. Since seventh grade, Kyle has known that he wanted to pursue a career in architecture. He looked at all his options and decided on the best fitting program. As Kyle researched his options, he discovered the MSU architecture program would be the perfect fit and it had connections in places that he could never have imagined.

"I grew up in Hattiesburg, MS as a big Southern Miss fan. When I started high school and began researching all of my options for architecture programs, MSU caught my attention. All in all, I would have to say the atmosphere is my favorite thing about MSU. Most of the time I am at school longer than I am at home because of my program commitments. All the great things Mississippi State has to offer radiate throughout the campus and create a one of a kind atmosphere. For me, it was a simple choice coming here."

Academic Major Insight - Architecture

MSU has the only professional architecture degree program in Mississippi. The School of Architecture, Art & Design offers an architecture program that is one of the most popular majors for transfer students at State. The major offers an intense, carefully structured, and rich array of courses that comprise a solid foundation for all types of architectural practice. The program takes 5 years to complete and is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

Transfer students interested in studying architecture at Mississippi State have multiple paths from which to choose to be successful in this program. The School of Architecture offers a curriculum designed specifically for a 1-year track at a community college followed by Summer Studio to enter directly into the architecture major.

After taking Summer Studio, transfer students can immediately start their 2nd year of Architecture school the following fall semester. This curriculum allows students to finish their program in the normal 5 year timespan. There are important required courses that interested prospective students must complete prior to transferring, and they are all outlined on the architecture program website.

MSU students and members of the Starkville community kicked off the holiday season with the "Holiday in the Junction" event hosted by Mississippi State University Student Association on Thursday, November 29, 2012.

Students took a break from studying and helped celebrate the spirit of the holidays. The event ran from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the MSU junction behind the MSU football stadium. Students were served free hot chocolate, given snacks and were able to enjoy listening to festive music. In addition, the MSU Praise Choir performed and MSU President Mark Keenum helped with the lighting of the MSU Christmas Tree.

The Starkville community and MSU students worked together to create a united and unique blend of old-fashioned Christmas traditions along with New South shopping experiences in downtown Starkville. Other events during the holiday season include the Christmas Open House, Holiday Bazaar, the Starkville Christmas Parade and Holiday Tour of Homes. The town of Starkville offers a variety of opportunities to get involved and experience the wonder of the holidays!

How To Get Tagged

Community College Freshmen - If you're bound for Mississippi State, go ahead and Get Tagged! There are 2 ways to become part of our Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) program.

If you were admitted to MSU as a freshman for Fall 2012 but decided to attend a community college first, just go back to apply.msstate.edu, log back in to your application and click the "TAG ME" button. Please tell us where you're attending community college and update your contact information as needed.

If you're in your first year of Community College but did NOT apply for admission to State as a freshman, you can still Get Tagged, too. Go to apply.msstate.edu and follow the directions to apply to the TAG program.

If you're a community college sophomore or a student planning to transfer from another 4-year institution, then the TAG program will not be the best fit for you. The traditional application for admission for Fall 2013 will be your best route.
