Bulldog Bound Perspectives - Rachel Cox

Rachel Cox

Meet Rachel Cox, a transfer student from Southwest Mississippi Community College. Rachel and her family have always been huge Bulldog fans, and there was no doubt in Rachel's mind that she would attend Mississippi State University. She always knew that MSU was the best fit for her to pursue her education in the field of biological sciences.

"I love Mississippi State and Starkville, and now it is also my second home. I come from a small town, and I feel that Starkville has that same small town, homey feeling. I chose Biological Sciences because I am pursuing a career in the medical field and felt like this area of concentration would best prepare me for that. MSU gives me the opportunity to learn information that directly correlates to what I will be doing in my career. Often as transfer students, we get to a big school like MSU and feel lost. I urge other transfer students to get on campus, get involved in your major and other activities. There are tons of opportunities for everyone, and involvement will greatly add to your overall experience at Mississippi State!"

Academic Major Insight - Biological Sciences

Biological Sciences Lab
Biological Sciences Lab

Mississippi State University's Department of Biological Sciences is home to more than 1,000 graduate and undergraduate students. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, and Medical Technology. Biological Sciences at MSU is one of the more popular degree programs among transfer students.

Students in Biological Sciences will take core classes focusing on the central principles of biology. There are several different tracks students can take to complete their degree. Within the degree requirements each student can tailor their program, with the help of a faculty advisor, to suit their interests.

A bachelors degree in Biological Sciences is considered a pre-professional degree that prepares the student for either advanced study in the biological sciences or specific training in a profession such as medicine, therapy, law, education, engineering, or business. MSU offers a variety of pre-professional degree tracks to their students to accommodate for their future careers.

On Wednesday, January 23, 2013, the Office of Study Abroad (OSA) will host the annual Study Abroad Fair in the Colvard Student Union on the Mississippi State University campus. The fair allows current students the opportunity to explore educational and work opportunities outside of the United States. Most programs at the fair offer credits that can be applied toward a degree at MSU.

The Office of Study Abroad was formed in the fall of 2008 and is housed within the Department of International Education. Students who participate in an MSU sponsored or affiliated Study Abroad Program are eligible to apply for Financial Aid to help cover the required costs.

The Department of Health Education and Wellness at Mississippi State strives to create a healthier culture. MSU on the Move is a program created by a grant provided by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation. This program offers health screenings, a public outdoor walking track, cooking demonstrations, empowering online resources, and recognition for healthy Super Dawgs. Students at MSU can educate, motivate and equip themselves with the tools needed to obtain a healthier lifestyle.

How To Get Tagged

Community College Freshmen - If you're bound for Mississippi State, go ahead and Get Tagged! There are 2 ways to become part of our Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) program.

If you were admitted to MSU as a freshman for Fall 2012 but decided to attend a community college first, just go back to apply.msstate.edu, log back in to your application and click the "TAG ME" button. Please tell us where you're attending community college and update your contact information as needed.

If you're in your first year of Community College but did NOT apply for admission to State as a freshman, you can still Get Tagged, too. Go to apply.msstate.edu and follow the directions to apply to the TAG program.

If you're a community college sophomore or a student planning to transfer from another 4-year institution, then the TAG program will not be the best fit for you. The traditional application for admission for Fall 2013 will be your best route.

Questions about Getting Tagged? Email us at TAG@msstate.edu.
