Bulldog Bound Perspective

Stephanie Brooke Felton
Stephanie Brooke Felton

Meet Stephanie Brooke Felton who transferred to MSU-Meridian from Meridian Community College. Both of Stephanie's siblings attended MSU-Meridian, so choosing to follow in their footsteps was an easy decision. Having a campus in Meridian was an added bonus that allowed her to stay home with family while earning her degree from Mississippi State.

Stephanie came to MSU-Meridian with an Associate's Degree in Nursing, but she wanted to further continue her education. Although she sort of stumbled upon the Bachelor's of Applied Technology program, she "was shocked to see all the opportunities in administration that the nursing degree combined with the BAT can offer. It's a win-win situation"

"Having graduated from MCC, I'm use to a community college atmosphere - smaller campus and smaller class size - and MSU-Meridian is just the same, which I love! It has a 'home' feeling, which makes the life of a college student just a little bit easier."

Academic Major Insight - Applied Technology in Healthcare

Interested in a degree in the health care industry? MSU-Meridian offers a Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) in Healthcare Services. This degree gives students who may have already completed an associate's degree with a number of technical credits the opportunity to apply up to twenty-eight of those hours toward completion of an undergraduate degree.

The BAT degree is unique to the Meridian campus. It represents a joint effort between MSU-Meridian and community colleges across the state to help students who have earned technical degrees work toward completion of a bachelor's degree. With local medical centers employing approximately 6,000 professionals in the Meridian area, this makes healthcare the largest industry in the city and region. This degree gives transfer students the opportunity to work in the medical community after finishing at MSU- Meridian.

The Game of Change

Loyola Univ Chicago vs MSU 1963
Loyola Univ Chicago vs MSU 1963

The 50th Anniversary of the "Game of Change" was hosted at Mississippi State University on December 1st to celebrate the 1963 basketball game when MSU faced Loyola University of Chicago at the match-up in the Humphrey Coliseum. MSU hosted former players from both 1963 teams, as well as their spouses. Deceased players' widows, former team managers and current university administrators also participated in the weekend's events.

The 1963 Bulldog basketball team defied an unwritten state law and snuck out of Mississippi to play against the integrated Ramblers -- and its four black starters -- in the NCAA Tournament.

Though MSU lost the game and Loyola went on to win the national championship, a trend of defying segregation and embracing equality had begun. To commemorate that defining moment in history, as well as celebrate the basketball players who competed then, the 2013 match-up in Starkville featured a reunion with time for fellowship and celebration. How to Get Tagged:

Community College Freshmen - If you're bound for Mississippi State, go ahead and Get Tagged! There are 2 ways to become part of our Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) program.

If you were admitted to MSU as a freshman for Fall 2013 but decided to attend a community college first, just go back to apply.msstate.edu, log back in to your application and click the "TAG ME" button. Please tell us where you're attending community college and update your contact information as needed.

If you're in your first year of Community College but did NOT apply for admission to State as a freshman, you can still Get Tagged, too. Go to apply.msstate.edu and follow the directions to apply to the TAG program.

If you're a community college sophomore or a student planning to transfer from another 4-year institution, then the TAG program will not be the best fit for you. The traditional application for admission for Fall 2014 will be your best route.
