Bulldog Bound Perspective - Willa Moncrief

Meet Willa Moncrief, who transferred to MSU-Meridian from Meridian Community College.  Willa chose MSU because traveling was very convenient from where she lived, and she had heard great things from former students about the social work degree program.

“I chose social work because of past experiences encountered in my life. These experiences gave me a desire to assist others with the hope that they may experience the same things I did. The instructors insure that learning is a must and that one must be competent in that area. I love that students can get involved in helping with programs such as Operation Reindeer where gifts are wrapped and delivered to patients. My advice to future transfer students would be to use your time wisely, get as much rest as possible, and always talk to your advisors or instructors in your program.”

-Willa Moncrief, Lawrence, MS

Academic Major Insight - Social Work

Are you passionate about helping others? MSU-Meridian offers a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree which prepares students for entry-level generalist social work practice. The program teaches students different ways to properly assess and develop therapeutic working relationships with diverse populations, utilize varying intervention approaches, identify strengths and enhance client problem-solving and coping skills, as well as program evaluation, advocacy, research, and community outreach.

Graduates of the social work program are prepared to work as a generalist social work practitioner in a variety of practice settings including: child welfare service agencies, family services, medical hospitals, mental health clinics, public health clinics, home health and hospice agencies, nursing homes, schools, business/industry, juvenile and family court, prisons, military, shelters for battered women/children, and community services.

Housing - On and Off Campus

Looking for your future roommate or a new place to live? Check out the Off-Campus Housing Services (OCHS) and MSU On-Campus Housing websites for a variety of housing options. About 30% of students who live on campus are upplerclassmen. MSU Housing & Residence Life holds a set number of rooms on campus for transfer students each year. Apply for housing by June 1st to meet the Transfer Housing Priority Deadline.

The Off- Campus website serves as a connection for students, faculty, and staff to the community.  The OCHS website works as a search engine for housing options and a digital way to connect to future roommates.  Each spring, OCHS hosts an oncampus housing fair for current students to check out various different housing options within Starkville and surrounding areas.
