Bulldog Bound Perspectives- Kandace McDaniel

Meet Kandace McDaniel, who transferred from Holmes Community College in Goodman, MS. Kandace chose MSU because of our nationally awarded meteorology program. While visiting campus for the first time, she fell in love with the atmosphere and knew this was exactly the place she wanted to finish her college career.

"Since I was 8 years old, I have had a passion for weather. All I ever wanted to do was watch the weather channel. My love for weather grew as I got older and studying meteorology was exactly what I wanted to do. Everyone in the program is here to help you, and the professors love for you to come by and visit to talk about the weather. My advice to transfer students would be to get involved within your department and in the university!"

-Kandace McDaniel, Grenada, MS

Academic Major Insight - Meteorology

Are you interested in tracking storms or being on the Weather Channel? Mississippi State University offers two-degree tracks in meteorology. The two tracks are Professional Meteorology Program (PMP) and Broadcast Meteorology Program (BMP). PMP prepares graduates for graduate school and/or a career as an operational forecaster. Outside of the meteorology core curriculum, PMP students are expected to take courses in advanced subjects such as advanced mathematics (calculus), statistics, computer programming, Remote Sensing and GIS.

The BMP prepares students for a career as a Broadcast Meteorologist. Students may earn an undergraduate (B.S.) degree in Geosciences with an emphasis in broadcast meteorology or a graduate (M.S.) degree in Geosciences with an emphasis in broadcast meteorology. Students in both programs have access to the state-of-the-art Mississippi State University Climate Lab Studio that serves as the hub of both meteorology programs. Check some of the most recent graduates videos and resumes.

Student Support Services

The Student Support Services (SSS) at Mississippi State University is comprised of two programs. There is the federally funded TRIO program and Disability Support Services. The SSS strives to provide services including advocacy, priority registration, testing services, counseling and guidance, career development, supplemental instruction, and tutoring.

The TRIO program assists transfer students with services such as: Priority Registration, Direct Correspondence with Financial Aid Counselors, Tutoring, Study Skills, Career Exploration, Advising/Counseling, and Cultural Enhancements. Disability Support Services assists transfer students by providing academic accommodations that have previously been received at another institution and by encouraging communication with instructors regarding accommodations.

Starkville Community Market

It's summertime in Starkville! Every year from May to August, Starkville Main Street hosts the Starkville Community Market on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The Starkville Community Market is managed by Starkville Main Street and brings locally grown produce; baked and canned goods; and hand-crafted items to Downtown Starkville, giving shoppers the opportunity to bring food from local farms straight to their own kitchens and tables throughout the summer. The Market also features a vibrant calendar of gardening, culinary and sustainable living demonstrations.

Want to get involved? Starkville Community Market needs volunteers weekly for setting up and taking down the market. There are various time slots to choose from and you can get directly involved by visiting the Maroon Volunteer Center Registration Portal.
