Bulldog Bound Perspective: Ellen Belk

Meet Ellen Belk, who transferred from East Central Community College.  Ellen chose MSU Meridian because she wanted to stay closer to home and be on a small campus. Special Education at MSU-Meridian found Ellen; she never dreamed of being capable of teaching special education.

“All my life, all I wanted to do was elementary education. I took some special education classes and got a job as a special education assistant teacher at my local middle school. I fell in love with special education. The special education program at MSU-Meridian has taught me, that no matter what the diagnosis of the child, he or she is capable of learning. I am so excited and honored to get to be a teacher in a special education classroom where I can make a difference in my students lives every day.My advice to future MSU transfer students is to explore your options. MSU-Meridian offers so many great classes and majors. I came here with a plan, but I explored my options, and now I am happier than ever with my career choice.”

-Ellen Belk, Philadelphia, MS

Major Insights: Special Education

Are you interested in teaching and working with children? The Bachelor of Science in Special Education is offered at both MSU Meridian and MSU Main Campus. The degree prepares students for teacher certification in special education (grades K-12) through coursework and experiences that focus on children and youth who have mild/moderate disabilities, severe/profound disabilities or other areas of exceptionality.

The Special Education program curriculum culminates finally with a teaching internship, which is a semester-long field experience in a public school setting. If interested in this program, check out the curriculum at the MSU Meridian and MSU Main Campus.

Holmes Cultural Diversity Center

The Holmes Cultural Diversity Center (HCDC) at Mississippi State University strives to enhance the college experience of culturally diverse students. The HCDC encourages, through sensitivity training and programming, the development of all cultures, especially minority and international students.

The HCDC offers peer counseling and ambassador programs aimed at helping freshman and transfer students make a successful transition to university life. During finals week in the fall and spring, the HCDC office remains open extended hours to offer students a place to study and relax. Check out the HCDC Facebook page for upcoming event information.
