Announcement

Happy Holidays! The Student Association takes the opportunity this time of year to reach out and help our surrounding counties by collecting canned good items for the local food banks as well as unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots and new and gently used coats for Coats for Kids. These are just a few ways the Student Assocation as well as many of our other student organizations actively participate in the community.

Bulldog Bound Perspective: Alex Weir

Meet Alex Weir, a transfer student from East Central Community College. A fascination with how the human body works led Alex to enroll in Kinesiology, a brand new degree program at MSU-Meridian.

One of a dozen students in the new program, Alex is excited about the many opportunities available in the area of Kinesiology, either as a gateway to professional schools or the growing field of Exercise Science.

"I'm so happy that I can study an area of science that I find interesting and remain close to home," said Alex. "Small class size has also allowed our kinesiology group to become a tight-knit community and our instructors are available for one-on-one help we need to be successful."

"For those students looking for a place to transfer to - MSU-Meridian has a wonderful team of staff and faculty that take pride in their work and are extremely helpful. Don't be afraid to ask questions and look into the many degree programs available at MSU-Meridian. For me - no matter where I go on campus, I always feel as if I'm among friends."

Kinesiology

Ki.ne.si.ol.o.gy n (Greek kinesis): "the study of the principles of mechanics and anatomy in relation to human movement."

Mississippi State University's department of Kinesiology is housed within the College of Education and offers numerous areas of study for undergraduate and graduate students. On the Starkville campus undergraduate students can choose one of four concentrations: Health Fitness Studies, Sport Studies, Sport Pedagogy and Clinical Exercise Physiology. The Clinical Exercise Physiology concentration is also offered on the Meridian campus and will eventually be housed in the Kress building, part of the downtown campus of MSU-Meridian. The renovated facility will have state-of-the-art labs, classrooms and a library.

The Phil Hardin Foundation Library

A $1.25 million gift by the Meridian-based Phil Hardin Foundation made possible a new 1,860 square foot university library on the MSU-Meridian College Park campus. The library was dedicated on December 3, 2013. The new facility was created through the renovation of three existing spaces formerly used for classrooms. In addition to housing 8,000 print volumes and journals, the library's resources include 16 public computer workstations, 15 laptop computers, a conference room, microfilm reader, print station and instructional laboratory and teacher station with capacity for 30 students.

A second library is also planned as part of the renovation of the Kress building located in downtown Meridian. The building will house the new Kinesiology program as well as state-of-the-art labs and classrooms.
