Bulldog Bound Perspective: John Sublett

Meet John Sublett, a transfer student from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gautier, Mississippi. John visited the MSU campus a few times before transferring and fell in love with the atmosphere. He chose to pursue a degree in physics, which offers smaller intensive classes and one-on-one interaction with his professors.

"I chose physics because I have always been intrigued by how the universe works on a small and large scale. My favorite thing about the physics department is how personal the professors are allowed to be since there is a smaller number of students majoring in physics. My favorite thing about the university would be that everywhere you look, there are new faces and personalities. Whether they are on the drill field or in the junction, everyone is always friendly. I would advise future transfer students to make friends in classes on the first day and form study groups. They can be the difference between a C and an A."

-John Sublett, Pascagoula, MS

Major Insight: Physics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Mississippi State University offers a variety of concentrations to students interested in the field of physics. These areas of study include: astrophysics, atomic, molecular, optical and plasma physics, computational physics, condensed matter physics and nuclear physics. These concentrations give physics majors opportunities to participate in faculty research.

Due to small class sizes, students are provided with the opportunity to work in some national and international labs. The Department offers masters and Ph.D. level courses. Physics students can apply for College of Arts and Sciences and departmental scholarships when they are posted online.

Center for America's Veterans

Mississippi State is among the top 50 best four-year colleges and universities in the nation for military personnel and veterans. The G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Center for America's Veterans, serves more than 2,100 student veterans, current service members, dependents and survivors. It was established in 2006 and provides services of advising prospective students on the admissions process and advising current students on their benefits and options.

The center has partnered with several different organizations and individuals to provide scholarship support to students. The Pat Tillman Foundation has worked directly with the center for the last two years to provide Tillman Military Scholarships to MSU veteran students and dependents. The center is set to break ground on a new $2.25 million facility in the spring of 2015.

Jack White and Mitt Romney

At MSU, there is something for everyone for instance the two events happening at the end of January.

Jack White will be performing at Humphrey Coliseum at Mississippi State University in Starkville on Tuesday, January 27th, 2015. This event is hosted by Music Makers Productions, a student group on campus. Tickets are still available to the general public and can be purchased on the Music Makers website.

On Wednesday, January 28th, 2015 the former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney will take part in the university's Global Lecture Series. Romney will be the featured speaker during the 6 p.m. free public lecture in Lee Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium. A moderated question-and-answer session will follow Romney's address. Overflow seating will be available in the Colvard Student Union.
