Bulldog Bound Perspective: Sam Martin

Meet Sam Martin, a transfer student from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, MS. Since a young age, Sam has been an avid outdoorsman. He chose to pursue a degree in Forestry because of his passion for the outdoors and the great academic support of the professors and staff within the Forestry department.

"I chose Mississippi State University because of the academics, specifically the highly regarded Forestry program. One thing I have learned from my degree program is the need to dispel the misconception of not being able to find a job after finishing my degree program. The opportunities and experiences the program offers prepares you well for a job in the industry. My advice to incoming transfer students is hit the ground running when it comes to studies and work for classes."

-Sam Martin, Booneville MS

Major Insight: Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture

The Department of Forestry at Mississippi State University offers a variety of concentrations to students interested in the field of Forestry. These areas of study include: natural resources, environmental preservation, wildlife, fisheries, aquaculture, forest products, forest/wildlife management, and urban forestry.

The Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science concentration gives students the opportunity to learn essential information and obtain hands on training to work for public agencies and private interests to manage wildlife and fish resources. College of Forest Resources scholarship applications are accepted from January to April 1 of each year. For more information, students can contact the CFR Office of Student Services by sending an email to lmiller@cfr.msstate.edu.

Maroon Volunteer Center

The Maroon Volunteer Center (MVC) serves as a clearinghouse to match volunteers with community partners and service opportunities on and off campus. The center provides services, programs, and events that allow the MSU community to utilize their talents and skills while assisting others.

Students can get involved by signing in with their MSU IDs to OrgSync to look for volunteer organizations and opportunities. Each spring, the MVC offers an alternative spring break to the Mississippi Delta. Participants spend spring break serving, learning, and having fun in the Mississippi Delta. Keep up to date with MVC through Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

The Magnolia Independent Film Festival

The Magnolia Independent Film Festival (The Mag) was held in Starkville, MS from February 19-21, 2015. The Mag is a filmmaker-friendly festival encouraging both amateur and professional filmmakers. Films are judged in seven categories: Best Feature, Best Short, Best Documentary, Best Foreign, People's Choice, United Way Best Student Film, and Ron Tibbett Award for Excellence in Film.

It was the first independent film festival in Mississippi started by Ron Tibbett in 1997. The three-day event is considered by many filmmakers as their favorite film festival experience and one of the leading steps to the Sundance Film Festival. How to get tagged:

Community College Freshmen - If you're bound for Mississippi State, go ahead and Get Tagged! There are 2 ways to become part of our Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) program.

If you were admitted to MSU as a freshman for Fall 2014 but decided to attend a community college first, just go back to apply.msstate.edu, log back in to your application and click the "TAG ME" button. Please tell us where you're attending community college and update your contact information as needed.

If you're in your first year of Community College but did NOT apply for admission to State as a freshman, you can still Get Tagged, too. Go to apply.msstate.edu and follow the directions to apply to the TAG program.

If you're a community college sophomore or a student planning to transfer from another 4-year institution, then the TAG program will not be the best fit for you. The traditional application for admission for Fall 2015 will be your best route.
