Bulldog Bound Perspective: Karleigh Kimbrell

Karleigh Kimbrell transferred to Mississippi State from Itawamba Community College. She was drawn to MSU from her campus visit experience and the fact that all her professors at ICC had studied at State.

"I really love the feel of the campus at Mississippi State; it's almost like walking into a movie. Everyone is really friendly and it's not hard to feel at home here. I worried about transitioning from a smaller campus to one this large, but I have really enjoyed the size of Mississippi State," explains Karleigh.

When asked what advice she would impart to prospective transfer students, Karleigh said, "Visit campus! I think the best thing that I ever did in picking a senior college was visiting the school. After my admissions counselor came to visit ICC I decided to visit campus and it made all the difference. You might not know where you want to be until you go and see it for yourself."

Major Insight: English

Our published faculty members teach our upper division classes as well as many survey level courses, and our small class sizes (generally 30 or below) give students the maximum opportunity for individual interaction with their professors. Studying English also helps students develop their ability to read perceptively, think critically, analyze problems, and write persuasively. For these reasons, a major in English has traditionally been viewed as good training for careers in law, government, business, and publishing, as well as for careers in teaching and writing.

Transfer students often enroll in the English Major having completed many of the Arts and Sciences core courses so make sure you meet with an advisor to determine how many pre-requisites you’ve already taken. Though not required, students majoring in English are strongly encouraged to produce portfolios of their work. Students can use these portfolios as evidence of their abilities and accomplishments as they apply for employment or graduate school.

L.A. Theatre Works presents Bram Stoker's "Dracula"

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the L.A. Theater Works will perform "Dracula" in the Bettersworth Auditorium in Lee Hall. This performance is part of Mississippi State's 2015-2016 Lyceum Series and the production company is known for its hybrid form of audio theater and innovative technological approach to theater. If you've not been on MSU's main campus recently, this is also a great opportunity to enjoy the recent renovations to the Auditorium and familiarize yourself with other current University construction projects such as the new Center for America's Veterans and the new classroom building.

Mississippi State's New Classroom Building

Officials broke ground on the 150,000-square-foot project on April 24, 2015. The structure will be reminiscent in design of the campus's legendary Old Main Dormitory, which was destroyed by fire in 1959.

"President Keenum said he wanted a building that the students would use and enjoy, so the new building will have a study group area, study rooms and seating areas," Hodges said. "There will be a commons area like in Mitchell Memorial Library, and it will be staffed by the library to assist students with their studying needs."

Although the new facility does not yet have a name, it is scheduled to open Fall 2016.
