Bulldog Bound Perspective: Maria Diener

Maria Diener transferred to MSU-Meridian from Hesston College in Hesston, KS, lead by a desire to be closer to home. Maria has wanted to pursue social work since her freshman year in college. As the time drew near to decide the next step in her academic career, the Social Work program at MSU-Meridian became the clear winner. “I had heard wonderful things about their Social Work program, their small student to teacher ratio was appealing, and I was excited to plug into the community of Meridian through the program.”

Maria enjoys many things about MSU-Meridian, but she particularly enjoys that the smaller atmosphere here allows her to get to know everyone in her program and receive one on one support from her professors. Transferring from a residential campus to the commuter campus of MSU-Meridian required some adjusting during her first semester. Now Maria is feeling more and more like MSU-Meridian is the right place for her. She offered this advice to future transfer students, "Give yourself time to adjust and you will feel at home at MSU-Meridian."

Major Insight: Social Work

Social Work Students Volunteering
Social Work Students Volunteering

Did you know that March is National Social Work Month? This years theme is, "Forging Solutions out of Challenges", MSU-Meridian will celebrate with an event on March 31st!

Social work is both a challenging and rewarding profession with the primary goal of helping people help themselves. Students in the Social work program learn ways to properly assess and develop therapeutic working relationships with diverse populations and how to utilize varying intervention approaches. They also learn to identify strengths and enhance client problem-solving and coping skills, and have the opportunity to participate in program evaluation, advocacy, research, and community outreach.

Graduates of the program are prepared to work as a generalist social work practitioner in a variety of practice settings. Students interested in pursuing a degree in social work can attend either the Meridian or Starkville campus of MSU. To learn more about the Meridian program go to meridian.msstate.edu/social-work/. For more information about the Starkville program you can visit socialwork.msstate.edu.

Maroon Volunteer Center

Mississippi State’s Maroon Volunteer Center connects nearly 5,000 students, faculty and staff volunteers to 60 community and campus partners performing more than 14,700 community service hours each year. A recent article published by The Dispatch stated that Starkville reported the most volunteers in the state in 2015, and they credited the Maroon Volunteer Center for their great contributions to the cause!

The Maroon Volunteer Center serves as a clearinghouse to match volunteers with community partners and service opportunities both on and off campus. The center also provides programs, and events that allow the MSU community to utilize their talents and skills while assisting others.

You can stay up-to-date on volunteer projects on the Starkville campus and in the community by signing-up for their weekly newsletter here. In addition, you can view all available volunteer opportunities on campus and in the community by creating a profile and logging in to OrgSync.
