Bulldog Bound Perspective: Ysolde Carreon

Meet Ysolde Carreon, a mechanical engineering major from Raymond, MS. Ysolde transferred to Mississippi State University from Hinds Community College. She chose MSU because she wanted to continue experiencing the southern hospitality this state offers. She loves that everyone is so approachable.

After starting out as a nursing major at Hinds Ysolde said "I quickly realized that I was more into mathematics and physics, making mechanical engineering a perfect fit." She said that a cool thing about the program can be found in an area of the library called GovDocs, where mechanical engineering students gather regularly. “If anybody ever needs help solving a math or physics problem, they can find a mechanical engineering student there who is willing to lend a hand.”

Ysolde offered some great advice for future transfer students. “MSU is full of supportive, well-educated professors; make sure to get to know at least one of your professors by asking for help when you are struggling in class. Not only are you building a relationship with them, but they can also serve as your mentor in the next few years you will be here.”

Major Insight: Mechanical Engineering

For more than 100 years, the Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University has been at the forefront of education and research. The Mechanical Engineering Department has a long history of quality engineering education and research. With total undergraduate and graduate enrollment of about 930 students, it is the largest of the engineering programs at MSU.

Mechanical Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to the design, development, and operation of mechanical and energy systems. The undergraduate program focuses on energy and mechanical systems and provides the broad technical education necessary for today’s high-tech world.

Since the range of applications is so broad, virtually all industries employ Mechanical Engineers in various capacities. Some of the major areas for employment are the manufacturing, chemical, paper, aerospace, utility, construction, transportation, petroleum, electronics, and computer industries.
