True Transfer Perspective:

Meet Will James, a transfer student from the Golden Triangle campus of East Mississippi Community College. He is originally from Philadelphia, MS. Will chose MSU because of their “excellent land surveying program.”

He decided on this path because of his love for the outdoors, and the great opportunities for employment in this field. Will said one of the cool things about the program are the labs. “They are very interesting, and do a great job of showing students how to use the instruments.”

His favorite thing about Mississippi State is “how accessible the professors are, and how willing they are to help.” Because of this, Will encourages future transfer students to “ask your professors for help when you need it.”

Major Insight: Surveying and Geomatics

Agricultural Engineering Technology and Business (AETB) graduates can find rewarding careers in a variety of agricultural, environmental, and industrial businesses. Students may pursue one of four concentrations within AETB: 1) Natural Resources and Environmental Management, 2) Precision Agriculture, 3) Enterprise Management, and 4) Surveying and Geomatics.

The Surveying and Geomatics emphasis provides students with the necessary prerequisites to begin the three-step process of becoming a registered Land Surveyor in Mississippi. These steps include academic training, three years of surveying experience (supervised by a registered land surveyor) and testing. Employment opportunities for registered land surveyors in Mississippi are exceptional and include an extensive number of land surveying or engineering firms as well as local, state, and federal government agencies. The demand for these highly trained individuals continues to far exceed the supply.

Information Technology Services (ITS)

Information Technology Services (ITS) was created in 1998 from a merger of the Thomas E. Tramel Computing Center and the Telecommunications department. ITS strives to enable communication and collaboration among information technology professionals and users of information technology at MSU. Their staff is committed to supporting all members of the University in their academic and administrative work.

MSU negotiates with vendors to make software available to MSU students, faculty, and staff for discounted rates or, in many cases, at no charge. ITS provides documentation for downloads and installations, workshops and training, as well as patches and updates. This step-by-step information is created for both Windows and Macintosh computers.
