Transfer Tracks Perspective: Abby Jackson

Abby Jackson transferred to Mississippi State from Northeast Mississippi Community College to pursue a degree in Architecture. She knew from a young age that she wanted to be an architect, and through research, found out that MSU would be the best place to pursue that dream. “MSU’s architecture program is accredited and ranked among the top 25 in the nation.”

Abby enjoys the opportunities her program presents. “Last semester we teamed up with the Building Construction Science program to design and build a cabin for a Boy Scout camp near Jackson, MS. It was really cool to learn how to use a variety of tools and to physically build a building and understand its construction.”

Abby said her favorite things about MSU are the people and professors. “They want you to succeed and will go out of their way to help you.” Abby encourages future MSU transfer students not to be intimidated by the term “transfer” saying “you will find your place and feel like you belong.”

Major Insight: Architecture

The School of Architecture offers the only curriculum in the state of Mississippi leading to a professional degree in architecture. The School offers an intense, carefully structured program, and a rich array of courses that constitute a solid foundation for architectural practice. The School has evolved from a creative idea into a thriving, energetic program currently housed in modernist facilities that have received state and regional design awards.

The state’s flagship School of Architecture was recognized and ranked #25 (out of 140) in the 2016 DesignIntelligence Architecture Programs in North America. The Bachelor of Architecture program offered by the School of Architecture at Mississippi State University has been continuously accredited by NAAB since its inception, and in 2016 the school was reaccredited for another full eight-year term. Maroon Volunteer Center – Delta Alternative Spring Break

During Spring Break, 30 MSU students will travel to the Mississippi Delta to live history, see the future, and make a difference in the lives of others. Students will embrace the rich history and culture of the Mississippi Delta during Blues, Civil Rights, and Native-American history experiences.

Students will feel the contrasting power and peace of the Mighty Mississippi while paddling in 30-ft handmade canoes with Quapaw Canoe Company. Participants will explore the Delta’s complementing and conflicting facets of natural resource management, modern agribusiness, local fresh-food initiatives, and high-tech manufacturing. Most importantly, throughout the entire week, students will be making a positive difference in the lives of others by completing a range of service-learning projects with youth development programs, Mississippi River conservation groups, locally grown food initiatives, and health education organizations.
