Student Spotlight: Keritan Shelby

Meet Keritan Shelby, a transfer student from Hinds Community College. His passions for math and video games led him to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering at Mississippi State because “they were known to have the best Engineering school in the state.” He said that it was also a childhood dream of his to one day make the next PlayStation. He realized after completing his degree in December of 2016 that his program “is one of the best at preparing students for real world applications.”

Keritan really enjoyed his college experience at Mississippi State. A few of his favorites include Bulldog Bash, football games, women’s basketball, and of course the MSU ice cream and cheese. Keritan encourages future transfer students not to rush graduation. “Don’t overwork yourself, because before you know it, you will be out of school. Enjoy every second of college.”

Major Insight: Computer Engineering

Modern computers date back only to the late 1940’s, when applied mathematicians and electrical engineers collaborated on the construction of rudimentary machines. Since that time, the capabilities and new applications for the digital computer have expanded at phenomenal rates.

Computer Engineering is directed toward the design and development of computer systems. The computer engineer is concerned with all aspects of the computing system–the hardware, the software, the algorithms used–and the application for which it is intended. As in other engineering disciplines, Computer Engineering emphasizes the design of practical, economic systems and bringing innovative solutions to bear on complex, often multi-faceted, problems.

The Computer Engineering program at Mississippi State is a jointly administered program of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, ece.msstate.edu, and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, cse.msstate.edu.
