Student Spotlight: Brady Dunaway

Brady transferred to MSU from Copiah Lincoln Community College to pursue a degree in Environmental Sciences in Agricultural Systems. The choice was easy for him after developing relationships with several faculty members within the Clay Lyle Entomology & Plant Pathology department through several years of attending and staffing camps hosted by the department.

Brady said, "I wanted to study a curriculum with a broad array of courses, and I found it! From soils to entomology to taxonomy of spermatophytes, I have already had so much exposure to many different areas of environmental science. Instead of narrowing in on one field, such as entomology, I wanted to understand it all. Ecology, as a whole, fascinates me and I feel that as mankind continues to expand our technologies and progress, there will be a need to evaluate our effects on the land."

For Brady, the MSU campus just seemed like the right fit! "Dr. Keenum is always willing to spare a moment for any student who passes by. Campus is always humming with activity, either students walking to their classes or events on the drill field. It's just easy to feel at home here." He encourages future transfer students to take advantage of every opportunity! Get active in the student body, learn from your instructors, meet your advisors and administrators, and get out and explore Starkville!

Major Insight: Environmental Sciences in Agricultural Systems

The Environmental Sciences in Agricultural Systems major provides an educational foundation to prepare students for diversified careers focused on environmental issues related to agronomic and horticultural production. Agriculture faces many challenges both now and into the future.

The United Nations projects a vast increase in global population from 6.1 billion in 2000 to 8.9 billion in 2050, a 47% increase. The demand for increased agricultural production imposes a continuum of challenges over the well documented environmental concerns of the 21st century.

Other environmental concerns include land use changes, pollution, ocean acidification, and water quantity and quality. A few careers within this field are Agricultural Scientist, Environmental Consultant, and Ecologist. For more information visit http://www.pss.msstate.edu/students/esas.asp.

MSU celebrates new school year with opening of Old Main Academic Center

Mississippi State officials celebrated the completion of the university's newly constructed Old Main Academic Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday August 14th. The 150,000-square-foot facility, built in the same style as MSU's famed Old Main dormitory that was destroyed by a fire in 1959, marks a new addition to the center of campus that will serve MSU students for generations to come.

"As we continue to grow, we are committed to providing our students and faculty with the resources they need to excel," MSU President Mark E. Keenum said. "The new Old Main Academic Center represents this commitment. It is a beautiful addition to the historic heart of our campus, but moreover, it offers an exceptional teaching and learning environment."
