Student Spotlight: Brian DeVeau

Brian DeVeau transferred from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to Mississippi State University in the fall of 2015 to pursue a degree in Professional Meteorology. He currently calls Biloxi, MS home but moved around a lot growing up, because of his father’s career in the Air Force. “I was born in Tucson, and I have lived in the Azores Islands, which is off the coast of Portugal, San Antonio, Texas; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Misawa, Japan; Omaha, Nebraska and now Biloxi, Mississippi.”

Brian chose to come to Mississippi State because of the professional meteorology program. “I have always been fascinated by weather. I remember as a child watching storms with my dad out the window, and I have been in awe of weather since. I was originally planning to be an engineer, but wasn’t sure about it. I decided to go to community college to get all my math, science, and electives done, and then decide what field I wanted to go into. After my time at MGCCC, I decided on professional meteorology. My career goal is to work for the National Weather Service.”

Brian has enjoyed learning about meteorology and how it works. “I love watching storms as they come through, and I always thought to myself, why is this occurring? Being able to not only learn why, but how to forecast when storms will occur is extremely cool to me.” His favorite thing about MSU is the professors in his department. “Each teacher has their area of expertise, and each teach their class with passion and energy, which makes it really enjoyable as a student.”

Major Insight: Professional Meteorology

The Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University strives for an integrated, interdisciplinary study of the whole Earth. The department offers a B.S. undergraduate degree program in Geosciences with emphasis in six different sub-disciplines or concentrations: Professional Geology, Geography, Environmental Geoscience, Broadcast Meteorology, Professional Meteorology, and Geographic Information Systems.

The Professional Meteorology program focuses on the study of atmospheric processes and climatic variability. Upon completion of the program, students will have met the coursework requirements for the National Weather Service, the private meteorology sector, or continue their education in graduate school. Students choosing the program with the broadcast emphasis can also work for the National Weather Service and also earn the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal of Approval. MSU, Nebraska To Meet Sunday In Special Exhibition Game

NCAA officials have agreed to grant waivers to college basketball teams wanting to play an extra exhibition game with the sole purpose of benefiting Hurricane Irma victims, and Mississippi State is one of many programs taking advantage of this opportunity.

The Bulldogs, under the direction of third-year coach Ben Howland, will host Big Ten foe Nebraska at 1 p.m. this Sunday at Humphrey Coliseum, with representatives from the MSU Student Relief Fund and Salvation Army collecting monetary donations to benefit Hurricane Irma relief efforts.

Admission to the game is free, and doors will open at noon with standard basketball game security screening procedures in place.

"This is a great opportunity to help so many people in need who were affected by the hurricane," third-year MSU coach Ben Howland said. "Hurricane Irma was devastating, and our hearts and prayers have been with everyone as they have dealt with horrific and tragic loss. This is a chance for us to do our part in helping those in need."
