Student Spotlight: Cassidy Voelkel

Meet Cassidy Voelkel, a transfer student from Pascagoula, MS majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Cassidy began her education at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and was able to transfer to Mississippi State while remaining close to home by taking advantage of MSU's new Engineering on the Coast program.

She chose mechanical engineering because it provided more career opportunities than some other engineering options. “I have always enjoyed mathematics and science and have had a passion for solving problems and understanding how things work. So I felt that some form of engineering would be the best choice for me.” Cassidy enjoys being able to learn how everyday items work and getting the opportunity to examine those items. “My favorite classes have been Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics because we were able to analyze common items that we had used before, which allowed us to have a much better understanding of how those items work.”

When asked to share her favorite thing about the university Cassidy noted “Many of the teachers are adjunct professors and bring valuable insight that many typical instructors may not provide. We have had instructors from NASA, Ingall's Shipbuilding, and Southern Company. All of these instructors gave us an idea of what to look forward to when we are entering the workforce and used unique examples from their jobs to explain things to us.”

Major Insight: Engineering on the Coast Mechanical Engineering

Future engineers living on the Gulf Coast now have an affordable option for earning a world-renowned education close to home. The Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University is now offering two Bachelor of Science degrees through a collaboration with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Students can complete a two-year Associate of Science degree before enrolling in electrical or mechanical engineering classes that will result in bachelor’s degrees from MSU. For more information visit bagley.msstate.edu/coast.

Mechanical Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to the design, development, and operation of mechanical and energy systems. In addition to their strong foundation in the sciences, mechanical engineers must develop speaking and writing skills and spend much of their time creating complex design processes.

Since the range of applications is so broad, virtually all industries employ mechanical engineers in various capacities. Some of the major areas for employment are the manufacturing, chemical, paper, aerospace, utility, construction, transportation, petroleum, electronics, and computer industries.
