2018 PTK Transfer Honor Roll Selection!

Mississippi State University has been named to Phi Theta Kappa’s 2018 Transfer Honor Roll, which recognizes excellence in community college transfer pathways.

MSU is one of 112 institutions selected to receive this honor!

Student Spotlight: Raechel Zimmerman

Meet Raechel Zimmerman, a transfer student from Pearl River Community College. After serving as President of PRCC’s Phi Theta Kappa, she chose to come to MSU-Meridian because of the lucrative scholarships MSU offers to PTK students.

Raechel is majoring in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English. “In my heart of hearts, I'm a writer, but only because I received unrelenting support and encouragement from my schoolteachers.” She said that she hopes to offer that same support and encouragement to her future students.

One thing that has impressed Raechel about the secondary education program at MSU-Meridian is the dependability of her fellow classmates, “Education majors make the best group project members!” She said she was drawn to the smaller campus MSU-Meridian offers . "I feel at home when I walk through those doors. It is everything I hoped it would be.” Raechel offered some advice to future transfer students, “Make your presence known, be sparkly, and do your projects with zest and passion. Don't be afraid to stand out!”

Major Insight: Secondary Education - English

The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education is designed to prepare teacher candidates to be licensed to teach middle and high school. On the Starkville campus, secondary education majors can select a concentration leading to 7-12th grade licensure in English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, or social studies, or they may choose a foreign language concentration which leads to 7-12 licensure. On the Meridian campus, secondary education majors may choose concentrations in English or social studies.

The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education - English degree prepares students through coursework and experiences that focus on foundations of education, subject matter knowledge, best practices, and clinical experience. The Secondary Education – English curriculum culminates in the teaching internship, a semester-long field experience in a public school setting.
