Student Spotlight: Seth Gillett

Meet Seth Gillet, a transfer student from Vancleave, MS majoring in Building and Construction Science. “I worked as a tradesman in residential construction for eight years prior to transferring and became excited about the industry. After talking to advisors, I found Mississippi State University had the best faculty and program to prepare me for success after graduation.”

Seth enjoys the unique studio based structure of the program. “Each semester, you move into the next studio utilizing the skills you have gained in previous studios. The Building and Construction Science program is one of the only construction programs taught using a studio approach. All the studios are hands on and scenario based, so it challenges you to research and solve issues that exist in the construction industry.”

Seth advises future transfer students to dedicate themselves to their studies. “The university will provide you with great resources and knowledge. If you dedicate yourself, you can receive a higher level of education than expected, so set the bar high.”

Major Insight: Building Construction Science

The College of Architecture, Art, and Design includes the School of Architecture, Department of Art, Department of Interior Design, and Department of Building Construction Science.

The Building Construction Science degree program, one of just two studio-based construction programs in the nation, is designed to prepare graduates for careers in construction or construction-related fields through an immersive, integrative, collaborative and transformational education. Graduates will be able to manage both construction projects and also the business of construction. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and provides a broad knowledge base in business, engineering, and construction sciences.

Building Construction Science students visit numerous construction sites and companies throughout their time at Mississippi State to give them as much experience as possible solving real-world problems. For more information visit caad.msstate.edu.

Holmes Cultural Diversity Center

The Holmes Cultural Diversity Center is named after Dr. Richard E. Holmes, the first African American alumnus. He made history by becoming the first African American to enroll at Mississippi State University in July 1965.

The Center provides cultural and educational resources for the University community via programming, mentoring, and advising. They seek to create an environment that celebrates the culturally diverse community at MSU, promotes the academic and personal success of students, especially minority and international students, and engenders the formation of individuals who are globally-minded and aware of the molding force of their own cultural background in a global society.
