Student Spotlight: Nicole Hickmon

Meet Nicole Hickmon, a transfer student from East Central Community College. She has been employed fulltime at Key Field Air National Guard in Meridian, MS for the past six years and has been a member of the Mississippi Air National Guard for eleven years. Because she has been fortunate with her military career, her desire to further her education while maintaining her employment led her to pursue a degree at MSU-Meridian.

“I began my journey at MSU-Meridian in Spring Semester of 2017 initially planning to major in Interdisciplinary Studies. After taking a very interesting criminology course under Dr. Amanda Cook my first semester, I enrolled in another criminology course the following summer, as an elective. Needless to say in the fall of 2017, I changed my major to Criminology. Dr. Amanda Cook and Mrs. Tina Ladner are the criminology instructors and their teaching style is phenomenal. We have learned about things like criminological theories, victims’ services, and even ways to assist incarcerated veterans transition back to society. This year was also the first year the department put on a Victim Services Resource Fair, and I was glad to be a part of that experience.”

Nicole’s favorite thing about MSU-Meridian is the flexibility and availability of services. She also enjoys the smaller class sizes. When asked what advice she would like to share with future transfer students, she said, “Never give up on your dream. Some things in life are temporary, but no one can take your education from you. MSU-Meridian is a great place to be. Everyone at this campus works hard to make sure your transition is smooth as possible!”

Major Insight: Criminology

Criminology, as a field, explores the nature and causes of crime. It also examines the impact crime has on society and how in turn society responds to the social problem of crime. The Bachelor's degree in Criminology emphasizes the study of types, patterns and trends in criminal behavior; the social etiology of crime; and the social response to crime and its effect on society. The program also trains students to analyze crime data, test explanations of crime and victimization, and critically evaluate crime theory and policy.

The Criminology program is appropriate for students wishing to pursue career paths in all justice related fields including: law enforcement; probation and parole; community based prevention and control programs; court based programs; and corrections. Students will be prepared to assume positions of leadership across a range of career paths in crime and justice related professions, as well as be prepared for post-graduate studies in Sociology, Criminology, and Law and Legal Studies. The next Mindfulness Monday will take place on July 16 from 12-1 p.m. on the Drill Field. Stress balls and other free giveaways will be available while supplies last. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place on the first floor of the Colvard Student Union. For more information visit https://www.msstate.edu/events/2018/05/mindfulness-monday/.
